Welcome to Mount View Middle School's Green School Certification Website!
OUR VISION:
Mount View Middle School is committed to nurturing an environment where students are engaged in learning about the environment and are empowered to act upon their lessons. We constantly challenge ourselves to provide students with opportunities to become environmental leaders of our school. From working on this website to creating our outdoor classroom, our students lead all of our environmental initiatives in both design and implementation.
In class, in clubs, and on committees, our students examine our school community's patterns of behavior and implement changes that lessen our environmental impact. By carefully integrating environmental initiatives throughout our school building and our curriculum, our students see environmental stewardship as part of becoming a responsible citizen, rather than an isolated lesson in a class or two. We strive to create a safe and innovative environment where kids feel that they have a voice and that they can make a difference.
Mount View has made great efforts to raise its environmental awareness during the last two years, and we are excited to continue expanding our green initiatives!
Thank you for considering our application!
Sincerely,
Kathy McKinley, Principal
Susan Mako, Teacher
Zach Spickler, Student (lead website application designer)
Mr. Redman, Community Partner
Mrs. Blessing, Parent
Ms. Prather, Facility Personnel
And All Of The Students of Mount View Middle School
OUR GREEN LEADERS:
Our Green Teams lead all of our Environmental Efforts. Here are the many ways that our staff, parents, and students lead our environmental efforts.
Environmental Club: Our school club is open year round to students who want to be environmental leaders in our school. Each year, members take a look at what is happening in our school and set goals to improve our habits. Last year, the club organized a recycling contest, posted reminders to turn off classroom lights, gave away plants for Earth Day, and organized our participation in the Tree-Mendous Maryland campaign. This year they have been organizing trashcan inspections, putting reusable paper bins in all classrooms, helping with our Bags and Bands campaign, and building our "Pledging Tree" that displays our community's environmental pledges.
Green Committee (PTA): Our PTA committee connects parent volunteers with students working on environmental projects. This year, parents helped students to design gardens, to find materials for projects, and to build our outdoor classroom. Our committee also ensures the sustainability of our projects and the summer maintenance of our gardens. This committee is an integral part of our ability to run so many projects simultaneously.
Green Committee (Staff): Our staff committee promotes Green initiatives at school. This year, the committee attended Green Schools workshops, worked on this application, and began to educate the staff on environmental opportunities such as community supported agriculture.
Green Team: Our Green Team is the working corps of our school. This motivated group of students collects our recycling, awards prizes to students caught "being green", and creates displays to highlight our successes. Their dedication makes our environmental initiatives sustainable!
Website Application Team: Students took the lead to design this application. Working both in school and at home, they took and uploaded pictures, designed our pages, and even wrote several of the entries about our projects. They were true leaders in our school, ensuring the application reflects our whole school and all of its green initiatives. (Entries written entirely by students have "written by students" or " *WBS " at the end of the entry.) (Captions to photos in a gallery can be accessed by clicking on the photo to enlarge it.)
Environmental Education Pilot Program: Through the leadership of our principal, Kathy McKinley, Mount View was pleased to pilot a new environmental education course for the 2010-2011 school year. 190 students are participating in this 10 week program designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about environmental issues and then effect change in our school community. This inquiry based program asks students to employ project management skills and see their idea go from inception to completion. We are excited to offer this class again this fall, and we will continue to develop its curriculum with the hope (and expectation) that it will be implemented throughout the county for the 2012-2013 school year.
