Mount View is a Gold Level PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) School, and we strive to acknowledge our students daily for their positive behaviors. Rewarding students for making good environmental decisions is a natural extension of our PBIS program. We congratulate students and staff as they successfully change their habits at school and become responsible stewards of our environment.
GREEN FIELD DAY!
A committee of students sponsored a Green Field Day on May 25th. All students signed up to work a 1/2 hour shift improving our school or learning more about the environment. Then students played a series of field games with environmental themes. This field day was completely organized and run by the student committee. They designed the activities, organized the materials, and ran the events.
Work activities included painting paper weights for our outdoor classroom, watching environmental movies like Inconvenient Truth, or even getting outside to mulch, edge, weed, or plant our new gardens. For the games, students played "sort the recycling" "water conservation relay" and "recycling tug of war."

SUCCESS IMPROVING NATIVE HABITATS:
Earth Day Wear Green and Plant Give Away:
Each year for Earth Day, our environmental club sponsors a free plant give away.
Staff members and parents collect seedling plants that have been
sprouting in their yard (such as maple and pin oak seedlings) as well as
extra portions of plants that they were dividing in their yard (such as daylilies and strawberries).
Students fill out request forms to receive free seedlings or plants, and
then we give away our garden treats until they are gone. Printed
instructions tell students all about their plants / trees and how to
care for them. We also sell Earth Day t-shirts with Mount View printed on them, and we invite everyone to wear green on Earth day. This yearly event is a wonderful celebration of
our planet and the plants and trees that it provides for us.
Scales and Tales Program: As a reward for winning second place in the Tree-Mendous Maryland campaign, our school received a free Scales and Tales presentation from the Department of Natural Resources. Students who had been "caught" being green at school, such as having a reusable lunch box or a stainless steel thermos or recycling in the cafeteria, were allowed to enter their name in a drawing to win a seat at the assembly.

SUCCESS REDUCING WASTE:
Congratulating Staff With Trash Can Inspections:
"Happy Earths" are distributed to all teachers' classrooms and staff members' offices if they are doing a good job recycling. To get a colored "Happy Earth", the trashcan must have no pieces of possible recycling in it. If the trashcan has 1-3 pieces of possible recycling in it, the classroom gets a black and white "Happy Earth." Inspections happen at least once a month. When teachers have collected enough Happy Earths, they receive a chocolate bar! *WBS

Congratulating Students with "Resolve To Recycle":
The Resolve to Recycle Campaign asked students to recycle more often in the cafeteria in the new year. Students in all grades signed pledges to promise to recycle. Now we surprise a lucky student who is picked at a certain time if they recycle in the cafeteria. They receive a prize if their name was on the pledge. This ongoing campaign allows us to celebrate student success all year long!! *WBS

SUCCESS REDUCING ENERGY USE:
Lamps:
27 staff members pledged to turn off their classroom lights when
students were not in the room and to use a desk lamp for working
instead. To reward teachers for taking the pledge, students worked with
Diane Sweeney (our energy expert) to provide the teachers with free
desk lamps and CFL bulbs. (More information about the Lamp Pledge is on our Energy Conservation page.)
Responding To Surveys: Responding to numerous student surveys about electricity use takes time out of our staff's day. Student committees make sure to celebrate teachers' participation in our energy assessment by giving survey participants sweet treats as "thank you's" for taking the time to help our Green Initiatives. These small tokens build a spirit of camaraderie as our whole staff strives to develop environmentally sustainable habits.
